Publishing Activities

This major group includes the publishing of books, brochures, leaflets, dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases, maps, and charts; publishing newspapers, journals, magazines, and other periodicals; directory and mailing list publishing and other publishing activities; and software publishing. Publishing also involves acquiring copyrights for content (information products) and making this content available to the general public by engaging in the reproduction and distribution of this content in various forms. All forms of publishing (in print, electronic or audio; on the internet; as multimedia products like CD-ROMs of reference books; and others) except for film publishing are included in this major group. This major group does not include the publishing of films, video tapes, and DVDs (major group 59) and the production of master copies for recordings or audio materials (major group 59). It also does not include printing (see 1811) and mass reproduction of recorded media (see 1820).
